Our popular system for ancients and medieval wargames goes digital!

Impetus is a grand tactical set that allow you to play over 3,000 years of history, from Ancient Sumeria to the Great Italian Wars. It is suitable for any scale of figures, from 2mm to 28mm (and over) thanks to its popular basing that allow you to recreate small dioramas.

The rulebook includes also 16 starter lists (Macedonians, Persians, Greeks, Mid Republican Romans, Carthaginians, Gauls, Caesar’s Romans, Parthians, Crusaders, Saladin’s Ayyubids, Teutonic Orders, Mongols, 100YW French, 100YW English, Francis I French, Charles V Imperials).

Many more lists are available from supplements called Extra Impetus. There are also several free lists (beta lists) available for free on the website.

NOTE. The digital version is the same of the book version (released in 2008). It doesn’t include amendments, clarifications and tournament rules that are collected in pdf called Advanced Impetus available as a free download at this link /product/134699/Advanced-Impetus

Any sign of the supporting army lists yet ?

Note. They already exist in paper format, but I would like the PDF so I have rules and lists together on my Ipad.

Also. I do have the pdf rules, and they do have a few of the army lists, but these are not the full list included in the supplements, so are not as interesting or flexible as the full lists in the add ons.

I now prefer pdf rules to paper copies. You can carry loads of rules on one Kindle or IPad, and you can search etc.

To be fair, many rule sets, and not just Ancients, do it this way. Rules and a few lists and then supplements.

This is a good start, but we really need the army lists to go with it to make it fully viable in this format.

I was just about to make the same comment as Geoff C. I realize the rules come with some army list, but without all of them available, some what pointless in buying the rules.

You missed this I suppose.
"The rulebook includes also 16 starter lists (Macedonians, Persians, Greeks, Mid Republican Romans, Carthaginians, Gauls, Caesar’s Romans, Parthians, Crusaders, Saladin’s Ayyubids, Teutonic Orders, Mongols, 100YW French, 100YW English, Francis I French, Charles V Imperials)."

I believe there are some available online for free. Also you can use the basic impetus army lists as a basis for your own lists.

I just received an email from the people at Impetus and they said they should have Supplement 1 available as a PDF by Christmas. Depending on sales, others to follow.

Hi Geoff,
The first army list book will be uploaded shortly. Depending upon the popularity of this as a pdf the others may follow. Even if the lists are only available as paper copies it is the rules that get the heaviest use so this still works.

There are 16 lists in the rulebook and many more beta lists (official even in competitions) here

Extra Impetus 1 will be available in the next weeks, anyway

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
