"England Expects..." CORE RULES

This simple set of card- and dice-driven “Fast-Play” rules is designed for use in re-fighting naval battles in the ‘Age of Sail’ (early 1700s to early 1800s), involving small or large numbers of ships, in a tabletop situation.

The game is meant to be played by two or more players, each having control of one or more three ship ‘Squadrons’. The whole ‘Fleet’ may comprise of a variable number of squadrons depending upon the battle being re-enacted and / or the particular Nations involved.

In these rules we are more concerned with the overall progression of the battle from a Commanding Officer’s viewpoint. Therefore the rules allow for a loose and informal game treatment that can easily be resolved in an evening (two or three hours).

In keeping with this concept, we also only take account of the larger sized ships – the Ships of the Line (“SoL”) and the biggest Frigates. Smaller ships (of less than 30 - 50 guns) are generally assumed to be almost ineffective in relation to the main fighting vessels of the time, although historically they would have performed a service in relaying messages, harassment, etc.

I have not played yet, so take these moments in that context. The rules are light and look to be a lot of fun. The focus is on "squadron commanders" and the admiral with each player taking on one of those roles and three ships to command. It will take some convincing to get it to the table because wind direction has almost no effect on play (it determined drift direction). I am going to try to get some ships to the table but may have to graft on some wind direction rules (which WILL increase complexity and play time). The gist of the flow of the game is that each leader has a rating and placed impulse cards in the deck (along with some squadron cards and some other cards) and as cards are drawn that squadron acts. Unpredictable and direct to the action.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
