Throughout the years I 've read dozens of wargame rules even played some of them ha! As far as ancients concerned from DBM+M to Field of Glory, Dux Britanniarum and Bellorum, WAB, WA, the Rampant variants, THW's Rally Round the King etc, etc. Never before I wrote a review probably because the games I liked had the proper recognition and for the others I didn't care but this one I believe deserves more.
So Just put five stars or write a few words? Write a few words.
Nice Layout, Colours that remind me FoG, many diagrams that clarify situations. Activation system and melee combat that involves both players. Action Points for the troops that relax the strict phases of a round and subtly providing realism. Easy to learn, easy to remember, easy to play without throwing out the important things.
The author probably a modest man, who by the way answered my questions almost immediately, says ''its a game don't been looking for a simulation''. Of course its a game but in my opinion in many situations seems much more realistic than others that preach their devotion to the minutiae of ancient battle.
The only thing I don't like is the the Starter Armies part, its too generic but you have to see the already published Republican Roman Army 280-150bc and the Gallic Army 400-50bc to understand what the author has in mind.
Using the army supplaments you can play just with bases without miniatures just put the funny but accurate cards of the various troops over the bases and you have your army plus profiles of troops on your table.
All in All Excellent.
