A Fistful of TOWs 3 - Free Preview

Watermarked PDF

A free, more comprehensive sample of all the crunchy goodness packed into A Fistful of TOWs 3's 461 pages.

We posted this because the built-in preview on Wargame Vault doesn't give an adequate overview of what the interior of A Fistful of TOWs 3 contains.

Please be aware that in addition to the PDF here on Wargame Vault, we also have released two print versions--a coil-bound edition and a hardback edition. Come see us on the Fistful-of-TOWs yahoo group for details.

Here's a brief list of some of the changes from FFT2 to FFT3:

  • Seven troop quality levels instead of four
  • Time scale changed from 5-7 minutes/turn to about 12 minutes/turn (i.e., five turns per hour).
  • New non-linear armor/pen scale
  • Vehicle armor ratings changed to give vehicle-specific flank and HEAT protection ratings instead of generic ones.
  • Movement rates of vehicles are slightly higher, and range of movement ratings expanded from FFT2's 5 to 12, to FFT3's 2 to 14.
  • Infantry have a separate ranged ROF and a close combat ROF.
  • Infantry can now dig hasty entrenchments during the game.
  • Infantry movement increased to 4 from 3.
  • Rules for embarking and debarking infantry/towed weapons clarified.
  • Listed the names of infantry LAW/MAW in the infantry data.
  • Artillery system completely replaced for one that more accurately models the different effects that artillery can have (interdiction, suppression, destruction, screening by fire, etc.).
  • Engineering rules were reworked and improved, including adjusting saving throws to more realistic values.
  • Airstrikes redone with more detail on weapon types.
  • Aircraft data provided now to associate airstrikes into aircraft loadouts.
  • FFT2's suppressed and pinned markers replaced with a different, cleaner suppressed mechanic for FFT3.
  • The Rule-of-halves used for deadground determination when spotting over terrain.
  • More terrain types included for period-specific needs (crops, paddies, hedgerows, etc).
  • Most of the halving of movement for various reasons was changed to costing 2 movement points, in order to further emphasize the benefits of motorization/mechanization.
  • Rules for airborne and amphibious assaults included.
  • Chemical rules completely redone, and Ty added a nice historical summary of chemical weapons use.
  • Tactical nuclear weapon rules redone, with more detail info.
  • Spotting chart simplified and some spotting ranges tweaked, especially for spotting infantry.
  • Towed weapons now a separate spotting class from leg units.
  • Improved point system for balancing scenarios.
  • Dynamic campaign system.
  • Scenario and campaign design guidance included.
  • Stand inventories included for each combat formation in the army lists to help folks know what they need to have to field that formation.
  • Tactical primer updated to reflect the new artillery system and changes to the infantry.

Impressive preview! This preview does a very good job of explaining what you get for your money in the full product without giving away too many details. I would have liked to see a brief discussion of exactly how the FFT3 rules differ from previous FF [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
