Naval warfare in the Age of Sail. The rules are written to cover the period 1740 - 1815, but can easily be used to fight actions before and after those dates. The new edition includes rule enhancements, improved graphics and a starter scenario. The intent here is to play multi-ship and full fleet actions. The rules take a much broader approach to combat and the allocation of damage then most rules for the period. The focus is on moving ships, firing cannon, and conducting boarding actions. A vessels damage is taken as ship wide rather then on individual guns, masts, or crew. My weight of broadside versus your weight of broadside. Remember the focus here is on multi-ship and fleet actions, commanders are more interested in if a ship is still in the fight rather then its specific damage and casualties. Players spend more time playing then on record keeping. Game play is quick and easy allowing large fleet actions to be fought to a conclusion in a single gaming session. The rules use the D6 to handle all actions. The action is fast and furious. Ship movement, cannon fire, fouling, grapplling and boarding actions are all covered. Additional and optional rules cover shore batteries, fortresses, fire ships, crew quality and more. also included are adjustments for fighting one on one duels. Casual players will love the ease of play and naval buffs can appreciate the laid back style that allows them to take command of a whole fleet and wage battle in a single evening. The rules are just fun to play. Grab a copy of It is Warm Work and put to sea.  Check out the ItisWarmWork Yahoo group.

I have now played this at three conventions and am still amazed at how simple the rules are to understand while at the same time giving me the proper feel of naval battles in the age of sail. At the latest convention I had almost forgot how the rules [...]

This is an excellent set of Age of Sail rules that I and my friends (even those barely interested in naval gaming) thoroughly enjoyed. It has the right fuzzy level of detail to not get bogged down while keeping tension and allowing for period tactics [...]

I'm a newbie to naval miniature games but I found this easy to understand and fast to play. The rulebook goes straight to the point so, if you're a newbie like me, you might have to look for some terms in Wikipedia to better understand them. On the oth [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
