Naval Command: Modern Naval Wargame Rules

Naval Command is a set of wargame rules for recreating naval battles with fleets of miniature warships and aircraft in the age of the guided missile and jet aeroplane. Covering the period from the late 1950s to the modern day or near future.

The game can be played with fleets ranging in size form one or two ships per side to full sized battlegroups of ten or more ships. The rules can be used for different sizes of ships ranging from small fast attack craft up to super-carriers engaged in open sea battles or littoral and amphibious missions.

The aim of these rules is to create a game that captures the feel and provides a fairly accurate recreation of modern naval engagements but is still relatively quick to play with reasonably sized fleets and does not require excessive bookkeeping and paperwork.

The rulebook contains all the rules needed to play the game and fleet lists for a range of nations.

Totally worth $10 folks if you wanna have a modern naval game to play, that isn't harpoon.

I would have preferred a bit more detail on things, but I'm ok with harpoon levels of detail. This kinda reminded me of the various simple starship games out there like the mongoose stuff or BFG, though with a nifty feel to it.

Make sure you get the ship lists at https://rorycrabb.wordpress.com/naval-command/.

Though the rules are a little light on detail for me, it is a great and well written rule set.

If you want help making those cards, let me know, and I can write something that takes the raw data and spits out little cards you can add the pictures to (or specify them in the raw data, like an excel file).

Still trying to find out about this. I was willing to take a chance on it at $5, so I put it in my cart, but when I came back it was back to $13 - even though there were still 4 hours left on the deal.

Any AARs or reviews? $13 is a lot of money for me right now.

I ddn't see anything that goes in to detail about the system. There are a number of other modern naval rules sets. What makes these different?

I'm planning to get some more detailed AARs uploaded very soon.

I have tried to make the rules as fast to play as possible without too many abstractions. I find many of the modern naval rules currently on the market to be too complicated with too much paperwork and book keeping.

These rules were the result of my desire for a simple and fun modern naval game that I could put on at my local wargaming club.

Hopefully they should speak to players new to the naval genre as well as offering enough details for experienced naval gamers.

Hi if there's enough demand I will definately look at making a print version available. I always prefer a hard copy as opposed to a pdf.

Yes a basic fleet list for the modern Chinese navy is included. I am currently working on expanded fleet lists fire the nations included in the rules and for other countries. These will all be available as free downloads.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
