STARS & CROSSES: Wargame rules for company-level battles on the Western Front in World War 2 in 6mm scale. Incredibly simple and flexible rule system.

Game Length: 30-60 minutes

Ages 10+

36-page softcover book, free PDF version, and 50-page PDF printables file.

Easy to learn, with modular expert rules you can use to customize your game play. Includes a PDF with printable counters and terrain hexes. Can be played as a hybrid board/miniatures game, thanks to unit bases that double as board game counters, with essential combat stats printed right on the unit base! Each player takes the role of a US Army or Wehrmacht platoon or company leader, with one or more platoons at his disposal, plus additonal units purchased with a point-buy system.

Features include:

  • Hex-based movement (no rulers needed!)
  • Intuitive range and sighting rules
  • Command and initiative
  • Custom-equip your rifle squads with snipers, bazookas, panzerfausts, and more
  • Infantry close assault and armor overrun rules
  • Ground attacks by air units
  • Called artillery fire
  • Wounded, medics, and aid stations
  • Specialized ammo like white phosphorus, smoke, and proximity shells
  • Stats for dozens of infantry and vehicle units

Three or more six-sided dice are required for play. See sample unit counters and terrain hexes at http://starsandcrosses.blogspot.com/

This is a pretty nifty little system. Placing the miniatures *on* the counters is a great idea, and it looks AWESOME!

This is a nice simple WW2 (but could be modern easily enough, as well as naval or sci-fi) game in 1:1 scale (but infantry teams/squads). You use larger hexes for movement/fire, so stacking isn't an issue, and needing to measure a lot pointless as well. Tanks have a 3-4 hex range, infantry 1-2, units roll 1-3 dice when the attack, some units have armor, movement is 1-2 of the large hexes.

Units have various special abilities like radio, indirect, and so forth.

The game is quick play, would easily allow a couple regiments on each side, and if you think of each big hex as a 300m or so area the ranges and movement work out ok. This system keeps you from spending too much time on the minutiae of more complicated systems. You could also play this on any standard hex map making for a quick play game in a small space. The counters are well designed, easy to...See more

Hi Eric,
Thanks for the great review. I have also thought about putting top-down graphics on the counters -- I'll keep it in mind.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
