This set for Paper Battles American Civil War depicts deployed US "Medium" Field Artillery. Limbers and caissons will be available in a forthcoming set.
The ACW Paper Battles set is stylized to be evocative of the period - in this case blurry 19th Century sepia photographs. As with all PB:ACW sets both small scale (figure height approx 10-15mm on 40mm X 20mm bases) and large scale (figure height approx 20-25mm on 60mm x 30mm bases) are included.
The basic element in this set is a gun with crew on a single base - either 20mm wide by 40mm deep (small scale) or 30mm wide by 60mm deep (large scale). This can be used as a flexible building block to create artillery units to fit your own preferred ACW rules or game scale. They can be used to depict 2-gun sections with multiple bases forming a battery or as a complete battery with multiple guns glued to a single large base. How you choose to use them is up to you!
As a very rough and ready rule of thumb (and such things concern you on the paper battlefield) remember that in ideal field manual conditions a 4-gun battery could have a frontage of about a third to half the full frontage of your average 400 man infantry unit in line and a 6-gun battery half to two thirds the frontage.
ABOVE Individual gun base - in this case 30mm wide by 60mm deep with 20-25mm figures.
ABOVE Individual gun bases used as sections in a Union 6-gun battery.
ABOVE Individual gun base mounted on a large 60mmX 60mm bare ground base (templates to mount on card are included). This could be used as a complete battery or as a section depending on your rules/game scale.
ABOVE A full battery of three sections made up of individual gun bases mounted on the large 60mm X 60mm bare ground bases.
ABOVE Here two single gun bases have been glued side-by-side onto card and cut out to form a single 60mm X 60mm base. You could create an even larger unit with a 90mm frontage by adding a third gun. Alternatively, in some rules systems this could be used as a two gun section with both guns represented.
Please note there is NO scenery in this set - the scenery in the pictures is work in progress and will be released in a future set.
There are seven PDF files all designed to print on both US Letter and International A4 paper using Adobe Reader. To ensure they print at the correct size you must choose your paper size and then select "Actual Size" from the "Page Sizing and Handling"sectiuon of Adobe Readers print menu.
The construction of the pieces in this set is similar to the English Civil War set - please visit my website at Billy Bones Workshop for a guide.
